  32. SYMPTOM:
  33.  
  34. 1. System hang when exiting Windows For WorkGroups.
  35.  
  36.  2. Checksum errors and inability to recover from errors when
  37. using ZMODEM on Procom or PCAnywhere.
  38.  
  39.  3. CRC errors during file transfers.
  40.  
  41.  4. Problems with some large block transfer packages such as
  42. SLIP/PPP packages and/or FAX programs.
  43.  
  44.  5. Hesitation in WINDOWS when doing large data transfers.
  45.  
  46.  6. Lack of reliability with applications that transfer large
  47. amounts of data when "Double Buffering On Writes" is disabled.
  48.   
  49.  7. If "Save Window Coordinates" was checked in the mapping
  50. utility, it did remain checked upon return to the utility.
  51.  
  52.  8. A spurious installation error when installing on a
  53. workstation with DR DOS 7.0.
  54.  
  55.  9. Heavy server utilization when using Windows Terminal (and
  56. perhaps other applications), when using hardware flow control
  57.  
  58.  10. Unnecessary memory usage because, resources (ICONs, etc.)
  59. that had been allocated for the NASI Mapping utility, were not
  60. released.
  61.  
  62.  
  63.  OVERVIEW
  64.  --------
  65.  WIN2NCS should allow you to use any Windows communications
  66. application which uses the standard Windows API calls, whether
  67. NASI compatible or not.
  68.  
  69.  - The "NASI Redirector" stays active at all times when Windows
  70. is active (unless you turn it off).  It traps all calls to the
  71. COM port, and redirects them to a NetWare Connect port.
  72.  
  73.  You can define up to 8 NASI Redirected ports within one Widows
  74. session.
  75.  
  76.  - With the NASI redirector, you do not have load NASI before
  77. running Windows.
  78.  
  79.  - The Redirector loads and calls NASI.DLL from within Windows
  80. and unloads it again when no longer needed.
  81.  
  82.  This version of WIN2NCS has been extensively tested with
  83. Microsoft Windows 3.1 (both Enhanced and Standard Mode).
  84.  
  85.  In addition, this version of WIN2NCS appears work with the
  86. following systems (see On-Line Help for information concerning
  87. known restrictions).
  88.  - Windows 95
  89.  - OS/2 Warp
  90.  - Windows For WorkGroups 3.11
  91.  
  92.  The version of WIN2NCS in WINTOO contains the following
  93. improvements over the prior version of WIN2NCS:
  94.  
  95.  A. Writes are now double buffered.  This eliminates the need for
  96. blocking mode and can increase performance on some applications
  97. 15% to 35%
  98.  
  99.  B. Win2NCS can now be installed on a network drive.  This allows
  100. all users to use the same Win2NCS, but have individual
  101. configuration files.
  102.  
  103.  C. If a user is logged on to the LAN, the user name and session
  104. names will be filled in with the logged in name, the first time
  105. security is invoked.
  106.  
  107.  D. There is now a box in the "Map Communications Ports" option
  108. called "Enable Mapping/UnMapping Of All Ports".  If this box is
  109. checked, the user can Map or UnMap any of the 8 Com Ports, and
  110. the UnMap button will not be grayed for local com ports that do
  111. not exist.
  112.  
  113.  E. There are now both VGA, and SVGA color palettes.  The default
  114. palette is VGA, but the user can select the SVGA palette.  NOTE:
  115. Only use the SVGA palette if the workstation's display driver
  116. supports at least 32K colors.
  117.  
  118.  F. The following three options are available during SETUP:
  119.  ---1. The configuration file to be created in the installed
  120. directory. 
  121.  Normally used for a local drive install.
  122.  
  123.  ---2. Configuration files to be based on the logged in name. 
  124.  This option will assign a different configuration file for each
  125. login name.  This option allows both Win2NCS and the
  126. configuration files to be centralized.
  127.  
  128.  ---3. The configuration file to always be on drive C:. 
  129.  This option will create and use a configuration file in the root
  130. directory of the users C: drive.  This option allows Win2NCS to
  131. be centralized, but with local configuration files.
  132.  
  133.  See the On-Line Help for more information concerning
  134. configuration files.
  135.  
  136.  G. 3D Effect
  137.  The Win2NCS NASI Mapping Utility will now default to the 3D
  138. look.  Dialogue Boxes in the NASI Redirector that are invoked by
  139. a communications application, will have the look of the calling
  140. application and not the NASI Mapping Utility.  Therefore, if a
  141. invoking communications program has the 3D look, the Dialogue
  142. Boxes of the NASI Redirector will have that 3D look.
  143.  
  144.  H. A new bit map will appear on the screen replacing the status
  145. information the first time you invoke Win2NCS.  The bit map will
  146. disappear and permanently be replaced by status information after
  147. the Map Communications Ports option is selected or the Win2NCS
  148. mapping utility is exited. 
  149.  
  150.  I. New Global Mapping Options
  151.  ---1. The option to enable or disable double buffering on reads.
  152.  
  153.  ---2. The option to enable or disable double buffering on
  154. writes.
  155.  
  156.  ---3. (DTR Control and RTS Control) New options to allow
  157. changing how DTR and RTS will act.
  158.  
  159.  ---4. Maximum ECBs Requested
  160.  This option is available for support of OS/2 and Windows 3.1
  161. Standard Mode. Under unusual conditions the user may be required
  162. to change the default value.

  165.  ---5. The option to either enable or disable the 3D look of the
  166. NASI Mapping utility.
  167.  
  168.  ---6. "Selected Gray Screens" allows the user to enable, or
  169. disable Gray Screens for the; Map Communications Ports Dialogue
  170. Box, Global Mapping Options Dialogue Box, and the Select Colors
  171. Dialogue Box.
  172.  
  173.  NOTE: To create the effect of the previous release, disable the
  174. 3D effect and the Selected Gray Screens.
  175.  
  176.  ---7. A "Defaults" pushbutton has been added to allow the user
  177. to reset the Global Options to the preferred settings.
  178.  
  179.  J. The maximum number of services that can be displayed in the
  180. Map Communications Ports option of the NASI Mapping Utility has
  181. been increased from 100 to 512.
  182.  
  183.  K. The "Set Maximum Ports" option in the NASI Mapping Utility
  184. will now allow single keystroke entry when setting the maximum
  185. number of ports (instead of having to clear the entry).
  186.  
  187.  L. Win2NCS will now work with OS/2.
  188.  
  189.  M. The install files are now flagged read/write to make it
  190. easier for the administrator to erase them.
  191.  
  192.  N. The README.WRI file can now be read prior to installation.
  193.  
  194.  O. The following ability will be enabled with the version of
  195. NetWare Connect which will follow NetWare Connect 1.0.

  197.  NOT FOR NETWARE CONNECT 1.0

  199.  The option to enable the Security Dialogue Box to prompt for 4.X
  200. context by checking the Prompt User For 4X Context in the Global
  201. Mapping Options. 
  202.  If the Netware Connect is a 1.X server or is running on a 3.X
  203. server, this entry is ignored.

  208. SOLUTION: 
  209.  
  210. 1. The Win2NCS NASI Redirector now unhooks from the COMM.DRV
  211. prior to exit.
  212.  
  213.  5. Double buffering is now implemented on reads to accurately
  214. reflect read status and potentially increase performance. 
  215.  
  216.  6. Double buffering is now implemented on writes to accurately
  217. reflect write status.
  218.  
  219.  7. "Mode Of Operation" changed in "Global Mapping Options" to
  220. default to blocking mode.
  221.  
  222.  11. All RTS and DTR state notification changes will now be
  223. trapped and a network packet will only be issued if the new state
  224. is different than the previous state.

  267. Installation Instructions:
  268.  
  269. 1. Create a directory (C:\TEMP).
  270.  2. Copy WINNCS.EXE into C:\TEMP.
  271.  3. Unzip WINNCS.EXE. 
  272.  4. Start Windows.
  273.  5. Use File Manager to go to C:\TEMP.
  274.  6. Run SETUP.EXE from C:\TEMP. 
  275.  For further details, regarding the Redirector, bring up on-line
  276. Help after installing it.
